About the Role

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is recruiting for a Digital, AI and Innovation Internship: Global Call for 2026 based in Kenya. This is a full-time internship position lasting three months, supporting UNDP’s efforts to integrate digital technologies and artificial intelligence across sustainable development work. The role sits within the Digital, AI and Innovation (DAI) Hub, which serves as UNDP’s central platform for advancing systems transformation, inclusive digitalization, and innovation across its operations in over 170 countries.

UNDP is the development arm of the United Nations, employing over 17,000 staff working on critical global challenges including extreme poverty, climate change, governance reform, renewable energy, and women’s empowerment. The organization recognizes digital transformation and artificial intelligence as foundational enablers for stronger institutions, evidence-based decision-making, and more effective service delivery. This internship offers hands-on experience in one of three specialization areas: systems transformation and innovation, programme delivery and capacity building, or data policy and governance.

Key Responsibilities

Depending on your assigned specialization, you will undertake work across the following areas:

  • Conduct research and produce written analysis on systems transformation, policy innovation, and emerging governance approaches relevant to sustainable development
  • Contribute to horizon scanning exercises and synthesize global and regional trends that inform policy development and institutional change
  • Assist in designing, documenting, and refining innovative policy and programme approaches intended to create system-level change
  • Support the delivery of digital, data, and artificial intelligence initiatives in partnership with UNDP Country Offices across multiple regions
  • Develop capacity-building materials and training resources on digital literacy, data governance, and responsible AI use for government partners and development stakeholders
  • Conduct research on data governance frameworks, data protection standards, and responsible data use practices
  • Draft policy briefs, background notes, and analytical summaries on data-related topics, digital strategy development, and governance frameworks
  • Coordinate activities and track progress related to national digital, data, and artificial intelligence strategies; monitor global and multilateral processes affecting digital governance

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed studies in a relevant field such as development, technology, policy, data science, computer science, economics, or public administration
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or professional interest in digital transformation, artificial intelligence, data governance, systems thinking, or sustainable development
  • Fluency in English (reading, writing, and verbal communication)
  • Strong analytical and writing ability; capacity to research complex topics and communicate findings clearly
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and familiarity with data visualization or digital collaboration tools
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a distributed, multicultural team in a home-based environment
  • Commitment to UNDP values including diversity, equity, inclusion, and zero tolerance for sexual exploitation, harassment, or discrimination
