About the Role
Save the Children is recruiting for a Specialist, Data Governance based in Nairobi. This is a full-time position within the organisation’s IT function, focused on establishing and maintaining data governance frameworks across the charity’s operations. The role supports Save the Children’s mission to uphold children’s rights and deliver effective programmes by ensuring data is managed, documented, and accessed according to organisational standards.
As a Specialist, Data Governance at Save the Children, you will report to data leadership and work across multiple business units to embed governance practices. The position involves hands-on implementation of policies, training delivery, and day-to-day operational support. You’ll work with databases, metadata tools, and business intelligence platforms to ensure data quality and compliance across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Put in place and maintain data governance policies, standards, and procedures organisation-wide, ensuring consistency and compliance
- Work with business teams to integrate governance practices into daily operations, delivering training and sustained capability-building support
- Build and run data quality monitoring processes, identifying inconsistencies and coordinating their resolution across teams
- Create and maintain data dictionaries, business glossaries, and metadata documentation to establish a common understanding of data assets
- Facilitate data governance forums and communities of practice, enabling cross-team knowledge exchange and collaboration
- Partner with IT to define and deploy data access controls that balance security with operational need
- Track and report on governance programme effectiveness, highlighting gaps and recommending improvements
- Deliver ongoing operational support for governance initiatives, troubleshooting issues and providing guidance to users
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in any field; a degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Business, or a related discipline is preferred
- Strong analytical skills to evaluate data quality and recommend improvements in collection and management processes
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems, identify data inconsistencies, and resolve governance-related challenges
- Proficiency in communicating with diverse stakeholders, running workshops, and explaining technical concepts in clear, accessible language
- Hands-on familiarity with data management tools, database concepts, and metadata management software; proven experience with Power BI for building dashboards and handling large datasets is essential
- Ability to operate effectively in culturally diverse teams, respecting different perspectives and ensuring inclusive practices
- Track record of proposing and implementing creative solutions to data management challenges
- Prior experience in data governance, data quality, data management, or equivalent roles is desirable; relevant certifications such as Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) are advantageous
