About the Role
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is recruiting a Software Engineer (Consultant) on a full-time basis to support the development and deployment of critical environmental digital tools. This is a three-month consultancy position based in Nairobi, working remotely with UNEP’s Office of the Chief Digital Officer. The role focuses on building web-based solutions that advance UNEP’s global environmental mandate and support implementation of 2026 sustainability milestones.
The Software Engineer (Consultant) will join a technical team responsible for the Water and Ecosystem Services Review (WESR) Knowledge Hub and the Environmental Data Toolkit. Your work will directly impact how UNEP delivers digital capacity-building resources to member states and partners. This is a technical consultancy role suited to an experienced software developer with a background in full-stack web development and familiarity with international organization workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and deploy WESR use cases, including the digital Environmental Data Toolkit modules (Assessment Tool, Capacity Pathways, and Policy Guide) on the WESR Knowledge Hub platform
- Contribute to front-end and back-end development of WESR applications, building content modules, navigation systems, and user interface components that function across devices
- Execute testing procedures, troubleshoot technical issues, and refine digital tools iteratively based on user feedback and findings from pilot implementations
- Produce technical documentation and conduct knowledge transfer sessions to prepare internal teams for long-term maintenance and updates of WESR systems
- Collaborate with the DevOps and Infrastructure team to ensure tools meet security, performance, and scalability standards
- Support coordination with international partners and UNEP stakeholders to ensure solutions align with organizational needs and technical requirements
Requirements & Qualifications
- Advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Management, Information Technology, or Software Engineering. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree plus two years of directly relevant experience may be considered
- Minimum five years of professional experience in database development, software systems analysis, design, implementation, and deployment
- Proven experience developing complex web applications and deploying them in production environments
- Demonstrated experience building workflow automation systems and service request tracking solutions
- Experience working within multicultural teams, including coordinating with junior staff and engaging with end-users or clients
- Prior experience with United Nations agencies, international organizations, or government entities is highly desirable
- Strong technical communication skills and ability to document systems clearly for non-technical stakeholders
