About the Role

Avenue Healthcare is recruiting a General Manager – Thika Hospital to lead its Thika facility. This is a full-time, senior executive position based in Thika that requires strategic vision and operational excellence across all hospital functions. Since 1995, Avenue Healthcare has delivered managed healthcare services to corporate clients and outpatient departments, establishing itself as a key player in Kenya’s private healthcare sector.

The General Manager – Thika Hospital at Avenue Healthcare will serve as the hospital’s most senior leader, responsible for translating the organization’s strategic plan into measurable clinical, financial, and commercial outcomes. You will oversee clinical quality, business sustainability, team development, and brand positioning while maintaining compliance with all regulatory standards and Avenue Healthcare’s corporate values.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead strategic planning, annual budgeting, and financial performance management for the hospital in alignment with Avenue Healthcare group strategy and targets.
• Identify clinical and commercial growth opportunities through gap analysis, expansion of services, and recruitment of specialist talent to increase patient volumes, referral networks, and market share.
• Establish and maintain working relationships with the Ministry of Health, insurance providers, corporate clients, and stakeholder organizations to support business development and hospital operations.
• Monitor and improve outpatient, theatre, and bed occupancy metrics, while controlling operational costs related to inventory, staffing, and overheads to meet financial performance goals.
• Build and supervise a senior management team and multidisciplinary clinical workforce, overseeing recruitment, skill development, performance management, and succession planning.
• Enforce medical ethics, professional standards, and compliance with all licensing, statutory, and regulatory healthcare requirements across the hospital.
• Establish clinical governance committees, maintain hospital-wide risk registers, conduct root cause analysis following adverse events, and drive quality improvement initiatives.
• Develop and execute the hospital’s annual marketing strategy, oversee community engagement, build partnerships that enhance brand positioning, and manage hospital marketing staff.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in medicine, business administration, health systems management, or equivalent professional qualification.
• Master’s degree (MBA, MSc, or MA) in a relevant discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of progressive healthcare management experience, including at least 3 years in a senior leadership role within a hospital or similar healthcare setting.
• Demonstrated experience in hospital operations management, financial planning and control, and leading multidisciplinary teams.
• Solid understanding of clinical governance frameworks, quality improvement methodologies, and patient safety standards including International Patient Safety Goals.
• Proven track record in strategic thinking, business planning, and driving organizational results.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills with demonstrated integrity and emotional intelligence.
