The Actuarial Associate – Life at Britam will support the organisation’s financial reporting and strategic planning processes through technical analysis and modelling work.

The insurance sector in Kenya requires skilled actuarial professionals who can deliver accurate valuations and insights that inform business decisions. This role sits at the centre of that requirement, working across product development, pricing and financial management activities. You will work closely with business segments and senior actuaries to ensure data quality and timely delivery of technical outputs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Liaise with assigned business segments to prepare valuation datasets and ensure data quality for monthly and ad-hoc reporting cycles.
  • Calculate insurance technical liabilities on a timely basis and prepare comprehensive reports documenting valuation findings and assumptions.
  • Contribute technical input to product development initiatives for the Life business line, including feasibility analysis and design considerations.
  • Support product pricing decisions and system configuration by providing actuarial inputs into the pricing and valuation platforms.
  • Conduct experience investigations as directed, such as expense analyses, policy lapse trends, intermediary investment returns and other business metrics.
  • Compile input datasets for the annual business planning cycle, strategy reviews and capital adequacy assessments, including stress and scenario testing on financial projections.
  • Coordinate with business segments to prepare data and analysis for management and board-level reporting and presentations.
  • Execute other duties as assigned by the Actuarial unit leadership.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • University degree in Actuarial Science or another highly quantitative discipline.
  • Demonstrated progress towards a professional actuarial qualification from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries or equivalent recognised body, with at least 2 actuarial exams attempted and passed.
  • 0–2 years of professional experience in an actuarial or similar analytical role.
  • Working knowledge of statistical techniques and experience with statistical packages or programming languages such as SAS or Visual Basic.
  • Solid understanding of the Kenyan insurance industry, including product types, regulatory frameworks and market dynamics.
  • Knowledge of reinsurance structures and how reinsurance arrangements function within insurance operations.
  • Competence with database management systems and data manipulation tools.

What to Expect

  • You will work in a structured actuarial environment with clear project cycles tied to financial reporting, business planning and capital management requirements.
  • The role involves regular interaction with business teams, IT functions and senior actuaries, requiring clear communication of technical concepts to non-actuarial stakeholders.
