About the Role
Syngenta is recruiting a Junior Accountant for its Kenya operations on a full-time basis. This position plays a central part in establishing and maintaining the financial infrastructure that supports the country’s operations. The Junior Accountant at Syngenta will report into the local finance function while coordinating with regional and global finance centres, ensuring alignment with group-wide standards and local regulatory requirements.
The role encompasses hands-on accounting work across fixed assets, payables, treasury, and transaction processing, combined with responsibility for statutory and tax reporting. The Junior Accountant at Syngenta will serve as a key point of contact for accounts payable activities and will contribute to month-end and year-end closing cycles. This is an accounting role in Kenya suited to someone with solid technical knowledge and the ability to work across multiple geographies within the Africa, Middle East & India region as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee accounting operations including fixed assets management, payables processing, treasury activities, and transaction recording in the ERP system.
- Prepare and record journal entries in the local entity’s books and maintain ledger reconciliations for balance sheet accounts in non-SAP environments.
- Lead involvement in month-end closing procedures, year-end processes, and reconciliation activities to ensure accuracy of financial records.
- Serve as the escalation point for accounts payable activities managed by the Global Finance Operation Centre and manage relationships with external service providers.
- Prepare statutory accounting reports, tax reports, and management reporting documents in compliance with local GAAP and group IFRS standards, with support for audit processes.
- Monitor and strengthen internal controls, identify emerging control risks, and implement process improvements to address control gaps.
- Detect and report any violations of company policy, code of conduct, or applicable laws to appropriate management, and ensure timely delivery of financial reports and services.
- Support group-wide reporting requirements and collaborate with business-facing finance teams, consolidation teams, and external audit providers on a regular basis.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of professional accounting experience, preferably with multinational organisations or in regulated finance environments.
- Working knowledge of IFRS and local Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, with solid understanding of statutory accounting and tax law concepts.
- Hands-on experience with ERP systems (SAP, S/4HANA, Oracle, or similar platforms); SAP experience is advantageous.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and the ability to conduct financial analysis, identify themes, and address root causes of discrepancies.
- Professional accounting qualification such as CA, CPA, ACCA, or CIMA is desirable; additional certifications in data analytics or change management are valued.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise tasks effectively, work within a cross-functional matrix organisation, and maintain strong communication with stakeholders including auditors, finance teams, and third-party service providers.
- Knowledge of Syngenta’s policies and procedures, including reporting standards, capital processes, group treasury policies, and transfer pricing requirements.
