About the Role

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is recruiting an IT Intern to support its information security and infrastructure teams on a full-time basis. This internship offers hands-on experience in cybersecurity operations, vulnerability management, and network infrastructure within a multilateral organisation. Based in Kenya, you will work alongside experienced security professionals to protect critical UN systems and data.

As an IT Intern at United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), you will contribute to security monitoring, incident response, risk management, and infrastructure support across the organisation’s IT environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor security dashboards including SIEM, EDR, and firewall systems to identify potential threats and anomalies in real time.
  • Perform initial assessment of security alerts and prepare escalations of high-risk incidents to senior analysts for further investigation.
  • Examine reported phishing emails and suspicious files using sandbox analysis tools to determine threats.
  • Document incident timelines and assist in preparing post-incident reports for organisational records.
  • Conduct regular vulnerability scans across network and application infrastructure layers.
  • Track and verify deployment of security patches and system updates across the enterprise environment.
  • Support security configuration audits against UN Secretariat policies and technical standards.
  • Assist in developing security awareness materials, coordinating phishing simulation exercises, and reviewing information security policies and procedures.
  • Perform user access reviews to ensure compliance with the principle of least privilege across systems.
  • Support configuration and secure deployment of Wi-Fi access points with proper encryption and SSID isolation.
  • Prepare and update network schematics, diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Assist in secure decommissioning of ICT equipment following data destruction protocols.
  • Communicate with site supervisors regarding infrastructure issues requiring information security intervention.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed an undergraduate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a closely related field.
  • Status as a final-year student in a bachelor’s degree programme, or current enrolment in a master’s or Ph.D. programme in a relevant discipline.
  • Alternatively, you must have completed a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. degree in Information Technology or a related field.
  • Official proof of current student status or degree completion must be attached to your application (transcript, letter from institution, or official certificate).
  • Foundational knowledge of information security concepts, network infrastructure, or system administration.
  • Familiarity with security monitoring tools, firewalls, or vulnerability scanning platforms is an advantage.
