About the Role

UN-Habitat is recruiting an Intern – Project Support (Shanghai Award) based in Kenya. This internship supports the Regional Programme Division and focuses on the Shanghai Award initiative, a United Nations recognition programme for sustainable urban development. As an intern, you will work under the guidance of the Inter-Regional Advisor and contribute to communications, content management, research, and event coordination activities across the Shanghai Award and Shanghai Manual projects.

The internship is suited for recent graduates or final-year students with interest in urban policy, communications, or international development. You will gain hands-on experience in a UN environment while supporting materials that reach global audiences interested in sustainable cities and improved housing practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, edit, and prepare communications materials including news articles, newsletters, email content, social media posts, and outreach resources related to the Shanghai Award and Shanghai Manual.
  • Update and maintain content across the Shanghai Award website and related online platforms to ensure accuracy and relevance.
  • Develop and organize technical documents and information systems for the Shanghai Award application and peer review processes.
  • Conduct research, collect case studies, and assist in drafting content for the Shanghai Manual project documentation.
  • Support database creation and data analysis work for both the Shanghai Award and Shanghai Manual initiatives.
  • Coordinate logistical and planning support for meetings, workshops, seminars, and related project events.
  • Provide general project management and administrative assistance as assigned by your supervisor.
  • Complete additional tasks as directed by the Inter-Regional Advisor.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree programme, Ph.D. programme, or equivalent graduate-level study, OR in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree (minimum), OR already holding a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. qualification.
  • Proficiency with standard computer software, particularly Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated commitment to the United Nations mission and the principles outlined in the UN Charter.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with people from varied cultural backgrounds, nationalities, and perspectives, with openness to different viewpoints.
  • Background or current study in Communications, Media Studies, Journalism, Public Relations, International Relations, Urban Policy, or closely related fields.
  • Experience organizing meetings and events (preferred but not required).
  • Experience creating public-facing content such as social media posts, email campaigns, newsletters, or press materials (preferred but not required).
