About the Role

Co-operative Bank of Kenya is recruiting an Employee Relations Manager for its Nairobi headquarters. This is a full-time position that sits at the centre of the bank’s approach to employee relations, labour law compliance, and disciplinary governance. The role reports to senior HR leadership and serves as the primary point of contact for all matters relating to staff conduct, union relations, and adherence to Kenyan labour legislation.

The Employee Relations Manager at Co-operative Bank of Kenya will work across the bank’s network branches and subsidiaries, ensuring consistent application of HR policies and disciplinary procedures. You will engage regularly with line managers, union representatives, the Ministry of Labour, and external legal counsel. This position requires someone with both technical knowledge of labour law and the interpersonal skills to navigate sensitive workplace disputes with professionalism and discretion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with branch and department heads to maintain uniform application of disciplinary procedures across all banking operations in Kenya.
  • Review disciplinary cases and investigation reports, then recommend and implement appropriate corrective actions in line with labour laws.
  • Organize and chair disciplinary hearing panels, ensuring fair process and proper documentation of all proceedings.
  • Communicate disciplinary decisions to line managers and monitor compliance with enforcement of agreed actions.
  • Handle all inquiries raised by the union or management regarding staff discipline, conduct, and grievances.
  • Liaise with the bank’s legal counsel on all litigation matters involving former or current employees, and represent Co-operative Bank of Kenya in Industrial Court proceedings.
  • Provide expert guidance to managers on the labour law implications of disciplinary and personnel decisions.
  • Conduct regular reviews of employment legislation and keep senior management and the board informed of regulatory changes affecting banking in Kenya.
  • Lead and participate in collective bargaining agreement negotiations with the union and represent the bank at Ministry of Labour conciliation meetings.
  • Maintain alignment between the bank’s HR policies and all applicable labour statutes and best practices.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Law (LLB), or Higher Diploma in Human Resources from a recognized Kenyan or international university.
  • Membership with the Institute of Human Resource Management (ICHRM) or equivalent professional HR body.
  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrable Human Resources experience in a busy, regulated environment, with specific focus on employee relations and labour law.
  • Detailed working knowledge of the Employment Act, Labour Relations Act, and other labour statutes applicable in Kenya.
  • Proven experience with disciplinary procedures, grievance handling, and union negotiations in a banking or comparable corporate setting.
  • Fluent written and spoken English; ability to communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders with clarity and tact.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Strong organizational skills and capacity to remain calm, focused, and productive under pressure and in rapidly changing circumstances.
