About the Role
The Coordination Intern at UN Women supports strategic planning and inter-agency coordination across the UN system, working with senior management in Nairobi. This is a full-time internship position with UN Women, the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. You will gain hands-on experience in how the UN system functions and contribute directly to coordination processes that advance gender equality across multiple UN agencies and Member States.
Working within UN Women’s coordination division, you’ll handle substantive and operational tasks that keep complex multi-stakeholder processes running smoothly. This role suits candidates with a strong foundation in gender issues, international relations, or related fields who want to understand how global policy frameworks get developed and implemented across the UN system.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the development, consolidation and monitoring of annual workplans, results frameworks and strategic planning documents for coordination activities.
- Prepare strategic notes, concept notes and internal planning documents that inform decisions by the Deputy Director and senior management.
- Integrate gender equality and women’s empowerment priorities into UN system-wide processes, common approaches and inter-agency frameworks.
- Draft briefing notes, background papers and presentation materials for senior leadership meetings, inter-agency consultations and external events.
- Compile, analyse and maintain current information on UN system coordination mechanisms, technical bodies and inter-agency processes relevant to the coordination mandate.
- Coordinate logistics and provide substantive input for high-level inter-agency meetings, events and processes, including those related to the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
- Organise and document coordination meetings, consultations and briefings—including preparation of agendas, background notes, summaries and action points.
- Support advocacy, communications and resource mobilisation efforts by conducting background research, contributing to proposals and reaching out to stakeholders.
Requirements & Qualifications
- University degree (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) in gender studies, political affairs, international relations or a closely related discipline.
- Currently enrolled in a graduate programme, in the final year of an undergraduate degree, or graduated within the last two years (if selected, must commence within two years of graduation).
- Fluent in English; working knowledge of another UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an advantage.
- Substantive knowledge of gender equality, women’s empowerment, human rights and sustainable development.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and use systems and processes to achieve measurable results.
- Strong written and oral communication skills with ability to synthesise complex information clearly and compellingly.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, handle confidential documents appropriately and build strong working relationships across UN entities.
- Core competencies: awareness and sensitivity regarding gender issues, accountability, creative problem-solving, inclusive collaboration and stakeholder engagement.
