About the Role
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Communications Assistant to support its Climate Finance Unit (CFU) in Kenya. This is a full-time position focused on strengthening the Unit’s communications output across multiple platforms and channels. You’ll work directly with the Communications Lead to shape how UNEP’s climate finance, nature-based solutions, and sustainable land use initiatives reach audiences globally and locally.
The Communications Assistant role is ideal for someone completing or recently finished with a university degree who wants hands-on experience in UN communications. You’ll develop practical skills in digital and traditional media while contributing to environmental governance messaging on issues that matter to Kenya and the wider region.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Communications Lead to execute the Unit’s communications strategy across digital platforms, traditional media, and other relevant channels.
- Write, edit, and proofread communications content including newsletters, blog articles, social media posts, media statements, and website material.
- Contribute to the creation and production of visual communications assets such as infographics, fact sheets, brochures, and presentation templates.
- Document CFU events, workshops, and key milestones by taking photographs, recording notes, and preparing post-event summaries.
- Maintain and refresh the Unit’s digital presence by updating website content and managing social media accounts.
- Track media coverage and prepare media roundup reports focusing on climate finance, nature-based solutions, and sustainable land use topics relevant to the Unit’s work.
- Attend CFU team meetings and assist colleagues with preparing reports, briefing documents, and communications resources as needed.
- Undertake additional communications tasks as assigned to support Unit priorities.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or have completed a postgraduate degree programme (master’s level or higher), OR
- Currently enrolled in or have completed the final year of a bachelor’s degree programme (or equivalent qualification).
- Academic background or training in International Relations, Geography, Environmental Science, Energy Policy, Communications, Business Administration, or a related field with focus on climate change, sustainable development, or international environmental governance.
- Demonstrated ability to write clearly and edit content for different formats and audiences.
- Experience or familiarity with social media platforms and content management for organizations.
- Basic design or visual communication skills; experience using design tools is advantageous.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple communications projects simultaneously.
