About the Role

APHRC is recruiting a Communications Officer for a full-time position based in Kenya. This role sits within the Policy Engagement and Communications Division, specifically supporting the CACEPS project. The Communications Officer will manage day-to-day communications activities, translate research into accessible content for diverse audiences, and lead the development of visual and multimedia products that enhance project visibility and policy influence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate research findings into clear, engaging, and non-technical content for policy briefs, blogs, articles, news features, social media, and web platforms.
  • Lead the development of multimedia content including infographics, dashboards, presentation decks, and short explainer videos that simplify complex data for policy audiences.
  • Manage and update website content, social media platforms, and email newsletters while optimizing all content for engagement and reach.
  • Support media relations activities including coordination of media interviews, press briefings, op-eds, and press releases; maintain media contact lists for consortium partners.
  • Develop communication materials for policy dialogues, workshops, and conferences, including event programs, banners, and presentations; provide live coverage through photography and social media summaries.
  • Create communication toolkits and standard messaging frameworks for projects; conduct structured knowledge capture sessions with research teams to develop clear positioning narratives.
  • Coordinate messaging consistency across all communication channels and partner organizations involved in collaborative projects.
  • Support policy engagement activities and funder reporting by providing editorial oversight and communications content that demonstrates project impact and success.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field; a degree in science communication or journalism is highly desirable.
  • Minimum five years’ experience working on multi-country projects and collaborating with partners from different countries.
  • Proven track record developing and executing communication strategies that align with organizational goals and promote scientific and policy engagement initiatives.
  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills with ability to produce high-quality content for web, social media, print, and multimedia platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience managing media relations, building relationships with journalists, and securing media coverage for research and policy initiatives.
  • Proficiency in digital tools and platforms including social media management systems, website content management systems, and multimedia production software.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously while maintaining strong organizational skills.
  • Fluency in English required; knowledge of French or other African Union languages is an advantage. Proficiency in design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign is preferred.
