About the Role
Kenindia Assurance Company Limited is recruiting an Underwriter for its Nairobi office. This is a full-time position focused on evaluating insurance risks, making underwriting decisions in line with established guidelines, and supporting the day-to-day operations of the underwriting department. This Underwriter at Kenindia Assurance Company Limited will work alongside the assistant underwriting manager, handling policy decisions, client inquiries, and operational workflows that directly impact the company’s risk portfolio and revenue.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate insurance applications and assess risk exposure to determine coverage eligibility, limits, premiums and policy terms based on comprehensive risk analysis.
- Input, update and review customer data within underwriting systems, ensuring accuracy of policyholder information and premium calculations.
- Process new policies, renewals and endorsements through underwriting approval workflows, approving transactions within delegated limits.
- Prepare, review and approve quotations in accordance with underwriting guidelines and within set authorization limits.
- Coordinate with the assistant underwriting manager on complex cases and policy performance analysis to support informed renewal decisions.
- Manage administrative functions including email management, mail registers, file dispatch and preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual underwriting reports.
- Respond to client and intermediary inquiries, maintain professional relationships and coordinate with service providers where required.
- Monitor compliance with underwriting policies, reinsurance guidelines and insurance regulations to safeguard against risk exposure.
- Mentor junior underwriters and support continuous improvement within the underwriting team.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field or equivalent professional qualification.
- Minimum 2 years of underwriting experience in the insurance sector.
- Diploma in Insurance or current enrollment in an insurance qualification programme.
- Membership with the Insurance Institute of Kenya (desirable).
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting.
- Working knowledge of insurance laws, regulations and compliance requirements in Kenya.
- Demonstrated analytical and administrative skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities to engage with clients, intermediaries and internal teams.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information and work ethically in all interactions.
- Capability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and make sound decisions efficiently.
