Technician (fibre & wireless) Job (40K) – Corporate Staffing Kenya Job Details

About the Role

An ISP company providing fibre and wireless connectivity solutions across Kenya is recruiting a Technician (fibre & wireless) Job (40K) for full-time deployment. You will be responsible for installing, splicing, testing, and maintaining fibre optic networks across last-mile and backbone infrastructure serving residential, SME, and enterprise clients. The position is approximately 80% field work and 20% documentation, network design support, and team coordination — making it suited to someone who works well independently across Nairobi and occasionally upcountry, and who values clean, standards-compliant installations.

This Technician (fibre & wireless) Job (40K) role in IT jobs in Kenya requires hands-on technical capability combined with problem-solving discipline and the ability to restore service quickly when faults occur. You will be expected to take ownership of installations and fault resolution, maintain accurate documentation, and contribute to network design efforts across the organisation’s growing footprint.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install and terminate single-mode and multi-mode fibre optic cables for FTTH, FTTB, and FTTP deployments, including aerial, ducted, and underground infrastructure.
  • Perform fibre splicing using fusion and mechanical methods with industry-standard equipment (Fujikura, Sumitomo, INNO models).
  • Install, mount, and configure customer premises equipment including ONTs, ONUs, routers, PoE switches, and patch panels to professional standards.
  • Run structured cabling (CAT6, coaxial where required) within residential and commercial buildings with neat, organised finishes.
  • Conduct optical testing including OTDR traces, optical power meter readings, VFL checks, and end-to-end link loss budgets before service handover.
  • Respond to assigned fault tickets within SLA windows; troubleshoot and resolve last-mile, distribution, and backbone faults from end-to-end.
  • Document all work with as-built diagrams, GPS coordinates, splice loss reports, photographs, and field activity logs submitted to the Field Operations Manager.
  • Participate in the on-call standby rota for after-hours, weekend, and public-holiday fault response and support route surveys and low-level design work for new builds.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Information Technology, or Computer Science from a recognised Kenyan institution; or TVET certificate at KNQF Level 5 or 6 in ICT, Electrical, or Electronics.
  • Minimum 2–4 years of hands-on fibre optic field experience in installation, splicing, and fault resolution. Candidates with 1+ year plus relevant attachments will be considered for junior-level entry.
  • CFOT (Certified Fibre Optic Technician) certification strongly preferred; candidates without it must be willing to obtain it within the first 6 months.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with fusion splicers, OTDR, optical power meter, VFL, fibre cleaver, and stripping tools.
  • Working knowledge of GPON architecture (OLT, ONT, splitters), PON link budgets, and basic IP networking (subnetting, VLANs, PPPoE, DHCP).
  • Familiarity with at least one major OLT vendor stack (Huawei, ZTE, or Nokia) at provisioning level.
  • Valid Kenyan BCE driving licence with at least 1 year clean driving record. A motorcycle licence (Class A) is an added advantage for last-mile work.
  • Physical fitness and comfort working at heights on poles and ladders, and in confined manhole spaces. Fluency in English and Kiswahili required.

What to Expect

  • Field-based work across Nairobi and occasional upcountry deployments, combining installation, testing, and fault resolution activities.
  • Compliance with occupational safety standards including working-at-heights protocols, confined-space entry procedures, traffic management, and electrical safety near power lines. Full PPE provision and use mandatory.
  • Adherence to Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) and county-government way-leave requirements on all builds, with GIS and network inventory system updates following every change.
