About the Role

Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is recruiting a Research Intern to support its laboratory and field operations. This is a full-time position based in Kenya, offering hands-on experience in biomedical research, sample management, and data collection within a Government research institution. The intern will work across multiple departments, contributing to critical studies in pathogen identification and genomic analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Input and manage data records in the laboratory information management system to ensure accuracy and traceability.
  • Receive, catalogue, and store study samples according to established protocols and archival standards.
  • Identify and enrol eligible study participants, ensuring recruitment targets are met and documented.
  • Prepare and maintain comprehensive records of all study activities, laboratory procedures, and participant interactions.
  • Compile study data into reports and summaries for review by senior research staff.
  • Conduct laboratory tests to identify pathogens and support diagnostic activities.
  • Assist with genome sequencing technology operations and sample preparation for molecular analysis.
  • Perform basic statistical and data analysis on research datasets under supervision.
  • Administer informed consent documents, questionnaires, and case report forms to study participants.
  • Monitor and uphold Quality Management System protocols across all assigned tasks.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in any Biomedical Sciences discipline from a recognised institution (mandatory).
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication, with ability to convey technical information clearly.
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving goals and taking personal responsibility for work output.
  • Reputation for honesty and ethical conduct in previous roles or academic settings.
  • Strong capability to interpret data, identify patterns, and draw conclusions from research findings.
  • Competence in computer applications, spreadsheets, and database management systems.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and contribute constructively to team objectives.
  • Fluency in both English and Swahili, spoken and written (mandatory).
