About the Role
Kenya Medical Research Institute is recruiting a Lab Technologist – Thika to join its laboratory operations team in Thika. This is a full-time Government position supporting diagnostic and research laboratory functions. The Lab Technologist – Thika at Kenya Medical Research Institute will play a core operational role in sample handling, quality assurance, and laboratory compliance across pre-analytical processes.
The Kenya Medical Research Institute operates across multiple sites in Kenya, including Thika, conducting critical medical research and diagnostic work. This Lab Technologist – Thika position requires a detail-oriented professional with laboratory science qualifications and hands-on experience in regulated research or diagnostic settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, process, and manage the storage and shipment of biological specimens according to laboratory protocols
- Prepare laboratory reagents and ensure they meet specification standards before use
- Verify that all specimens and associated request forms are correctly labeled and routed to the appropriate laboratory sections
- Maintain comprehensive laboratory records and oversee quality checks (QC) for all pre-analytical activities, including inspection of supplies, equipment, and environmental conditions
- Take part in laboratory audits, compliance monitoring visits, and Quality Assurance (QA) programs to meet regulatory standards and maintain result accuracy
- Stay current with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GCLP) guidelines and comply with all applicable legal and research ethics requirements
- Monitor laboratory inventory levels and coordinate with relevant departments to ensure timely supply of consumables and materials
- Keep the laboratory workspace clean, safe, and secure in accordance with all occupational health and safety regulations
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences from an accredited institution, or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (mandatory)
- Current, valid practicing license from the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) (mandatory)
- Minimum 2 years of practical experience working in a high-volume diagnostic laboratory or research laboratory setting (mandatory)
- Competency in computer applications and laboratory information systems (mandatory)
- Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality, data integrity, and ethical conduct (mandatory)
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to present information clearly to colleagues and supervisors (mandatory)
- Capability to work collaboratively across diverse teams and contribute to a cohesive laboratory environment (mandatory)
- Strong analytical abilities and capacity to deliver accurate results within defined timelines and quality standards (mandatory)
