About the Role
Greenpeace is recruiting an IT Officer for a full-time position based in Nairobi. This role oversees the administration, maintenance, and security of the organization’s complete IT infrastructure—spanning servers, networks, systems, and end-user support. The IT Officer ensures that all IT systems operate at peak performance, remain secure, and support business continuity across Greenpeace’s regional offices while meeting organizational objectives.
The IT Officer position requires someone comfortable managing multiple technology domains simultaneously: virtual environments, operating systems, network infrastructure, cybersecurity protocols, and user support operations. You will work across Windows, Linux, macOS, and VMware platforms while coordinating with internal teams, managed service providers, and technology vendors to maintain service levels and drive continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer VMware virtual environments, Linux, Windows, and macOS systems across all regional offices, ensuring stability, performance, and reliability while performing patch management, upgrades, and preventative maintenance to minimize downtime.
- Monitor system performance indicators including server health, storage utilization, and resource optimization; conduct routine backup testing, restoration exercises, and disaster recovery procedures to maintain data integrity.
- Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot LAN, WAN, and wireless network infrastructure including routers, switches, and access points; resolve advanced connectivity issues involving ISPs, ADSL connections, and infrastructure failures to sustain business operations.
- Monitor network performance metrics, track Wi-Fi and LAN speeds, support workstation connectivity, and ensure the proper functioning of data center infrastructure including UPS systems and air conditioning.
- Implement and enforce cybersecurity policies, maintain user access controls and identity management systems, and monitor for suspicious activity and security vulnerabilities; conduct regular security audits and risk assessments to ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Lead cybersecurity initiatives including CIS security framework implementation and OKTA SSO integration; manage firewall configuration, antivirus protection, and endpoint security tools while supporting incident response and breach reporting procedures.
- Provide first and second-level IT support through a ticketing system for hardware and software incidents; log, track, and resolve user issues efficiently while training staff on new systems and managing user account provisioning and offboarding via WorkspaceOne (MDM), OKTA, and Bitwarden.
- Develop and maintain IT documentation including policies, standard operating procedures, system configurations, and best practices; manage backup schedules via CIBECS backup systems and provide regular status reports to senior management.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience managing VMware virtual environments and both Linux and Windows server operating systems in a production environment.
- Hands-on experience with network administration including LAN/WAN configuration, wireless network deployment, and troubleshooting of network infrastructure and connectivity issues.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks, access control management, identity and access management (IAM) systems, and experience implementing security policies and vulnerability assessments.
- Proficiency with IT service management ticketing systems, end-user support operations, and user account management across multiple platforms and operating systems.
- Experience managing backup and disaster recovery systems, conducting restoration testing, and developing recovery procedures to ensure business continuity.
- Familiarity with IT vendor and managed service provider management, including contract negotiation, SLA compliance monitoring, and service quality evaluation.
- Strong documentation and communication skills; ability to develop and maintain technical procedures and policies while working effectively with multiple stakeholders across regional offices.
