IT Assistant at Mpala – Mpala Kenya Job Details

About the Role

Mpala Research Centre is recruiting a technically skilled IT Assistant to join its Information Technology team on a full-time basis. This role provides frontline technical support across office and field operations, maintaining system reliability, communications infrastructure, and data integrity in a research and conservation setting. Based in Kenya, the IT Assistant will be the primary support contact for end users, managing hardware, software, networking, and IT asset oversight while supporting specialized systems including EarthRanger and radio communications platforms.

This is a hands-on position suited to someone with a solid foundation in IT support and the ability to work across multiple systems and environments. You will report to the IT Manager and be expected to manage technical issues independently where possible, escalate appropriately when needed, and support both office-based staff and remote field teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver first-line technical support for desktop computers, laptops, printers, software applications, and user access permissions
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network connectivity and systems issues before referring to senior IT staff
  • Maintain and update the IT asset inventory, supporting periodic audits and equipment tracking
  • Assist with EarthRanger data reporting, extraction, and basic analysis for operational requirements
  • Monitor IT systems, perform routine maintenance schedules, apply software updates, and conduct general troubleshooting
  • Support field teams and remote operations with IT assistance and communications support
  • Manage TrboNet radio communication systems and field connectivity equipment
  • Document IT processes, create and maintain knowledge base articles, and update standard operating procedures
  • Coordinate staff onboarding and offboarding, including system setup, access provisioning, and account closure

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Telecommunications, or a related discipline
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in IT support, help desk operations, or systems administration
  • Sound knowledge of computer hardware architecture, software applications, and foundational networking concepts
  • Demonstrated experience managing IT assets and supporting users in high-volume environments
  • Experience with field communication systems, EarthRanger platform, or radio systems is advantageous
  • Valid Kenyan Driving Licence with a clean driving record (mandatory)
  • Availability to travel regularly to field sites and remote operational locations
