About the Role

As General Manager, Compliance Testing at Equity Bank Kenya, you will report to senior management and hold responsibility for delivering independent, risk-based assurance across retail banking, microfinance, and related services. This is a hands-on leadership position requiring both strategic oversight and technical depth in compliance testing methodologies, regulatory frameworks, and control assessment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of a risk-based compliance testing programme aligned to the Enterprise Risk Management Framework, regulatory requirements, and banking industry standards.
- Develop and approve the Annual Testing Plan, ensuring comprehensive coverage of all branches and Head Office functions based on risk-driven prioritisation.
- Direct and oversee the execution of both onsite and offsite compliance testing, ensuring adherence to approved scope, timelines, testing methodologies, and quality standards.
- Provide independent assurance on technical compliance, control design adequacy, and operating effectiveness of controls in line with regulatory expectations and internal policies.
- Review and approve all compliance testing reports, delivering clear, insightful outputs with robust root cause analysis and executive-level findings.
- Enforce and monitor adherence to service level agreements for testing execution, reporting, and remediation, with performance tracking and escalation of delays.
- Oversee end-to-end issue management, including identification, tracking, remediation, validation, and sustainability monitoring of control effectiveness.
- Drive stakeholder engagement through structured communication of testing outcomes with Heads of Functions, ensuring ownership and accountability for remediation actions.
- Lead and develop the Compliance Testing team, ensuring delivery of high-quality second line assurance, strong technical capability, and adherence to professional standards.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, plus professional qualifications such as CAMS, ICA, or equivalent certification in compliance or audit.
- Minimum 8–10 years’ experience in Compliance, Risk Management, or Internal Audit functions.
- At least 5 years in a formal leadership role within second line or assurance functions.
- Proven experience in risk-based compliance testing, regulatory engagement, control assurance frameworks, and compliance reporting.
- Strong knowledge of compliance testing methodologies, risk assessment frameworks, and control design principles.
- Working knowledge of banking operations, regulatory requirements, and their practical application in a banking environment.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret regulatory requirements and translate them into operational compliance programmes.
- Strong analytical capability with data-driven decision-making skills; excellent report writing and executive communication abilities; proven leadership and stakeholder management experience; high integrity and professional judgment.
