About the Role
Co-operative Bank of Kenya is recruiting a full-time FX Trader to join its Trading Unit in Kenya. This Banking role sits at the heart of the bank’s foreign exchange operations, requiring a skilled professional who can execute currency trades, manage FX positions, and contribute to revenue targets across the bank’s treasury division. You will report to the Head of Trading Desk and work across a range of currency pairs and money market instruments.
The FX Trader at Co-operative Bank of Kenya will operate within a structured trading environment, balancing profit objectives with strict risk controls and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities
- Formulate and document the Trading Unit’s strategic approach using fundamental and technical analysis, working closely with the Head of Trading Desk to align objectives and market positioning.
- Monitor and manage the bank’s foreign exchange position within statutory and internal risk limits, ensuring compliance at all times.
- Conduct market research and gather intelligence to forecast trends and expectations across major currency pairs.
- Execute foreign exchange trades to achieve budgeted FX revenue targets and support business objectives.
- Process customer requests for currency transactions, ensuring all trades meet service standards and client expectations.
- Oversee inter-bank FX trading activities, confirming that all procedures, policies, and operational protocols are observed.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency and quality of treasury product delivery.
- Reconcile trading positions and profit figures with the Middle Office, Market Risk, Finance, and Back Office teams to ensure accuracy across all records.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a business-related discipline, mathematics, or engineering.
- Minimum four years of general banking experience, including at least two years of direct involvement in foreign exchange and money market trading or treasury operations.
- ACI (Dealer) Certification in Foreign Exchange and Money Markets — this is a mandatory qualification.
- Sound knowledge of risk management principles and how they apply across financial markets.
- In-depth understanding of treasury products and services, from initiation through settlement.
- Demonstrated experience working with FX trading platforms and related systems.
- Strong analytical ability and comfortable working with numerical data and complex calculations.
- Solid negotiation skills and a proven ability to collaborate effectively within team settings. Knowledge of microeconomic and macroeconomic principles, with the ability to interpret currency and interest rate trends in local and global markets.
- Awareness of local and international market developments and their potential impact on exchange rates and interest rates.
