About the Role
AAR Insurance is recruiting a Risk and Compliance Officer for its Nairobi headquarters. This is a full-time position reporting directly to the Group Head of Risk & Compliance, where you will play a central role in identifying, assessing, and mitigating enterprise risks across the organisation. You will support the company’s regulatory obligations in Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Counter-Terrorist Financing (CFT), data protection, and business continuity management while ensuring alignment with corporate governance standards and industry best practices.
AAR Insurance is a licensed financial services provider and member of the Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI), operating through an extensive network of branches and brokers across Kenya. Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and coordinate the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Terrorist Financing (CTF) program on a daily basis, including preparation of Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs) and Cash Transaction Reports (CTRs) for submission to the Financial Reporting Centre.
- Conduct periodic AML/CFT risk analyses on clients, agents, and products; perform customer due diligence (CDD) reviews and prepare risk assessment findings.
- Support the development and maintenance of AML/CTF training materials, guidance documentation, and internal control procedures.
- Perform risk and control assessments by defining inherent and residual risk levels, evaluating control design and operational effectiveness, and establishing action plans to remedy gaps.
- Identify and analyse key risk indicator trends; monitor implementation of corrective action plans for indicators that exceed risk appetite thresholds.
- Execute functional control self-assessments, determining relevant controls for testing, defining sample sizes and standards, and reporting assessment outcomes to management.
- Conduct root cause analysis on identified risk and compliance events; monitor remediation efforts to ensure full resolution and prevent recurrence.
- Consolidate risk reports from departmental risk champions and assist in preparing quarterly risk and compliance reports, risk dashboards, and management briefings.
- Monitor adherence to anti-bribery, data protection, conflicts of interest, and Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) policies across the organisation.
- Support business continuity planning activities including impact analysis coordination, test participation, and documentation maintenance.
- Assist in organising and delivering staff induction and training sessions on risk registers, AML, data protection, and compliance topics.
- Act as the risk and compliance champion on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) matters and support the annual review of policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Law, Business Administration, Risk Management, Accounting, Finance, or a related field; or HND with relevant professional certification.
- Minimum one year of experience in managing risk management frameworks, governance structures, and compliance programs within a regulated financial services environment.
- Professional certification such as CRISC, CISM, CISA, CFE, CPA, or a Diploma in Insurance is advantageous.
- Strong knowledge of regulatory and legal requirements including data protection legislation, financial services regulations, AML/CFT standards, and industry-specific compliance obligations.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess complex risk situations and develop practical mitigation strategies.
- High ethical standards, integrity, and discretion when handling sensitive compliance and risk information.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare clear, detailed reports and briefing materials for senior management.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with the capacity to influence stakeholders across all organisational levels.
- Strong attention to detail and proficiency in preparing comprehensive compliance and risk documentation.
