About the Role

Consolidated Bank of Kenya is recruiting a Debt Recovery Officer to join its collections and recoveries team. This is a full-time position based in Kenya, reporting directly to the Debt Recovery Manager. The successful candidate will take ownership of the bank’s non-performing loan portfolio, working across debt recovery, asset monitoring, restructuring negotiations, and court-related matters. Key Responsibilities

  • Negotiate settlements and arrange amicable repayment agreements with debtors assigned to your portfolio or branch.
  • Initiate and maintain contact with borrowers, conduct client visits, and document all interactions thoroughly.
  • Work with the Debt Recovery Manager to file and oversee repossession proceedings when security has been pledged; monitor repossession agents to ensure timely execution of orders.
  • Recommend to management the engagement of investigators to trace additional assets when repayment defaults occur and shortfalls are anticipated.
  • Coordinate with external partners—debt collection agencies, legal counsel, auctioneers, and investigators—tracking compliance with issued instructions.
  • Collaborate with the Legal department on the preparation and issuance of statutory demand letters and court documents.
  • Maintain comprehensive debtor files with detailed notes on correspondence, face-to-face meetings, and telephone discussions.
  • Represent the bank in court proceedings as a witness when required; provide supporting documentation and evidence to lawyers handling the bank’s cases.
  • Review and assess provisions and interest suspense accounts on sub-standard, doubtful, and loss-classified accounts in line with Central Bank prudential guidelines.
  • Prepare timely and accurate non-performing loan reports for management review.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law, Finance, Commerce, Economics, Accounting, Banking, or a related business field.
  • Professional certification in Law, Credit Management, or Debt Collection (preferred).
  • Minimum three years’ experience in debt recovery, collections, or portfolio management within a bank or regulated financial institution.
  • In-depth knowledge of Kenyan lending legislation, credit agreements, and regulatory requirements governing loan portfolio management.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data analysis techniques for loan performance tracking.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; demonstrated ability to negotiate effectively with borrowers under pressure.
  • Excellent planning, organization, and analytical abilities with proven problem-solving capability in complex recovery scenarios.
