About the Role
Tana is recruiting a Database Administrator to join its operations team in Kenya. This full-time, remote position supports a global provider of international mobile top-up services that operates mission-critical, high-volume systems across multiple cloud infrastructure environments. The Database Administrator at Tana will be responsible for keeping production database environments running smoothly, with a focus on performance, reliability, and uptime across the organisation’s core systems.
This is a hands-on technical role that requires someone who can work independently while staying connected to a broader engineering team. You’ll be part of an on-call rotation, meaning you’ll support production systems outside standard working hours several times per month. The position runs from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM EAT, giving you time-zone alignment with the company’s operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain SQL Server and MongoDB production databases, ensuring they meet operational standards and business requirements.
- Monitor database systems continuously and respond to performance bottlenecks, outages, or operational issues as they arise.
- Participate in incident response procedures, investigate root causes of failures, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Optimise database queries, design indexing strategies, and refine configurations to improve system performance and resource efficiency.
- Manage Kafka environments in production, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
- Collaborate with engineering teams on database architecture decisions, data infrastructure improvements, and capacity planning.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts using PowerShell, T-SQL, Bash, or similar languages to reduce manual work and improve system observability.
- Oversee database security controls, including role-based access, encryption, audit logging, patch management, system upgrades, and vulnerability remediation.
- Lead capacity planning and forecasting activities to ensure the database infrastructure can handle future growth and maintain service reliability.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Minimum 4 years of professional experience as a Database Administrator, Database Engineer, or in a Data Engineering role.
- Hands-on expertise with Microsoft SQL Server, including high-availability features, Always On configurations, indexing strategies, and performance tuning techniques.
- Practical experience working with at least one cloud platform—AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
- Production-level experience with either MongoDB or Apache Kafka in a live environment.
- Strong scripting capabilities using PowerShell, T-SQL, Bash, or equivalent languages.
- Solid knowledge of database performance optimisation and tuning methodologies.
- Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools used in database operations.
- Ability to work independently while communicating effectively with engineering teams, problem-solve complex technical issues, and develop new skills as requirements evolve.
