About the Role

Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is recruiting an Assistant Research Officer – Epidemiologist/Data Analyst for a full-time position based in Kenya. This role sits within the research and data analytics function, where you will manage longitudinal epidemiological datasets and generate routine health indicators that inform policy and programme decisions. The Assistant Research Officer – Epidemiologist/Data Analyst at Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) will work across multiple health facility datasets, translating raw data into structured epidemiological products. You will support both routine monitoring and implementation science workstreams, ensuring data quality, reproducibility, and actionable outputs for stakeholders. This is a permanent, full-time Government appointment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Construct longitudinal datasets for epidemiological analysis, applying protocol-defined selection criteria and standardised variable definitions to capture mortality, severe morbidity, service coverage, facility readiness, and workforce metrics.
  • Calculate standard epidemiological indicators including mortality rates and ratios, effective coverage breakdowns, case-mix profiles, referral pathway summaries, admission acuity classifications, and event counts from facility and surveillance data.
  • Generate descriptive statistical analyses and formatted outputs to support trend monitoring, quarterly performance snapshots, and facility-level dashboards that feed into interrupted time series and counterfactual analytical models.
  • Contribute summary figures, tables, and narrative summaries to quarterly technical reports and annual institutional publications.
  • Work alongside the implementation science team to produce routine process indicators, quality improvement summaries, and visual materials for facility feedback and learning cycles.
  • Consolidate quality improvement findings, operational constraints, and facility capacity assessments into documented contextual notes to support process evaluation and result interpretation.
  • Assist in building facility-level implementation tracking indices and statistical summaries of workforce skill progression over time.
  • Develop and maintain reproducible analysis documentation, code notebooks, and best practices; contribute to strengthening data architecture, version control, and quality assurance processes.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health, or a closely related discipline. Mandatory.
  • Minimum one year of hands-on experience in a research setting, including applied statistical analysis of routine operational or surveillance data. Mandatory.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in statistical software such as R or Stata for data manipulation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Competency in data visualisation tools and techniques; ability to produce clear, publication-ready figures and dashboards.
  • Meticulous attention to detail in data quality control, validation, and documentation protocols.
  • Strong written communication skills; ability to translate technical findings into accessible summaries for non-specialist audiences.
