Information Technology (IT) Manager at Trees for the Future – Trees for the Future Kenya Job Details

About the Role

Trees for the Future is recruiting an Information Technology (IT) Manager to establish and lead the organization’s internal IT function for the first time. This full-time position is based in Nairobi and reports to the Vice President of People & Culture. The role combines hands-on technical management with strategic planning, ensuring that staff across Trees for the Future’s operations in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have reliable, secure IT infrastructure and support.

As an organization working to address global challenges through the Forest Garden Approach, Trees for the Future recognizes that strong technology infrastructure directly enables field teams, program staff, and administrative personnel to deliver impact. The Information Technology (IT) Manager at Trees for the Future will be the architect of this function, responsible for day-to-day operations, vendor partnerships, and building the governance structures needed to support a growing global organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide responsive, accessible IT support to staff across the organization, serving as the primary escalation point for technical issues and routing requests to external vendors where appropriate.
  • Oversee the Microsoft 365 environment, including user license provisioning and offboarding, Teams administration, and Exchange Online management to support a distributed workforce.
  • Lead a comprehensive SharePoint governance initiative: audit current usage, establish information architecture, define access permissions, and create staff guidance for the shared file environment.
  • Own relationships with external service providers, including the Managed Service Provider (MSP) and Rippling IT, directing their work on behalf of Trees for the Future and managing contract value and performance.
  • Lead the August 2026 rollout of Rippling IT, including systems architecture validation, coordination with the MSP, and change management communication to staff.
  • Manage identity and access governance: user provisioning and deprovisioning workflows, role-based access control (RBAC), single sign-on (SSO), multi-factor authentication (MFA), and application access permissions.
  • Maintain and improve the organization’s security posture, own the security awareness training program, and serve as internal lead for cybersecurity documentation and policy.
  • Develop and execute a phased IT Improvement Plan covering infrastructure stabilization, SharePoint governance, and Rippling IT implementation.
  • Lead Trees for the Future’s approach to AI tools and governance, supporting the development of organizational AI policy, evaluating tools that could benefit staff, and ensuring responsible adoption.
  • Provide dotted-line management and day-to-day guidance to in-country IT Coordinators as the organization builds IT capacity across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in a computer science, information technology, or related field (BA/BSc/HND or equivalent).
  • Minimum 5 years of professional IT experience, with hands-on management of Microsoft 365 environments (SharePoint, Teams, Exchange Online, Entra ID).
  • Proven experience directing the work of a Managed Service Provider or IT service provider—not just submitting tickets, but managing vendor performance, contract renewals, and holding providers accountable to organizational needs.
  • Demonstrated expertise in identity and access management, user provisioning workflows, role-based access control, and security governance.
  • Strong ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and manage change across distributed, cross-cultural teams working across different time zones.
  • Experience supporting staff onboarding and offboarding workflows, including IT preparation and account deprovisioning.
  • Alignment with Trees for the Future’s mission and values; genuine commitment to using technology as a tool for organizational impact.

What to Expect

  • This is a foundational role building organizational IT infrastructure from the ground up, requiring initiative and comfort with ambiguity in a growing organization.
  • You will work across multiple countries and time zones, partnering with program teams, People Operations, and external technical advisors to deliver IT services that enable field and office staff.
