About the Role

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is recruiting a Communications and Outreach Intern based in Nairobi. This is a full-time internship position supporting UNEP’s global mission to set the environmental agenda and advance sustainable development across the United Nations system. As the world’s leading environmental authority, UNEP works with governments, civil society, scientists, and international partners to address pressing environmental challenges and shape policy responses.

The Communications and Outreach Intern will work within UNEP’s communications team, contributing to the development and delivery of strategic communications materials, outreach campaigns, and awareness initiatives. You will support the interim secretariat in preparatory activities while gaining practical experience in environmental communications and stakeholder engagement at a major UN agency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the interim secretariat with preparatory work for the convening of the resumed first session of the Plenary of the Panel, including coordination and administrative tasks.
  • Draft communication materials including fact sheets, infographics, banners, brochures, posters, and presentation templates for internal and external audiences.
  • Create briefing notes and outreach messages tailored to specific stakeholder groups and communication objectives.
  • Contribute to awareness-raising and information-sharing activities, including drafting web content and updating UNEP digital platforms.
  • Prepare communication materials specifically designed for intergovernmental meetings and stakeholder consultation events.
  • Support the development of outreach resources targeting governments, scientific institutions, civil society organisations, and international partners.
  • Assist with other related communications tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree programme, or enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. programme, or have already completed one of these qualifications. You must provide official proof of your academic status.
  • Field of study should be closely aligned with communications work. Preferred fields include communications, science communication, media studies, international relations, environmental policy, environmental management, political science, environmental law, public policy, development studies, or related social sciences.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with standard computer software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. You should be comfortable using web-based platforms and relevant digital tools.
  • Strong knowledge of graphic design and communications software such as Canva, Adobe InDesign, or equivalent tools is highly desirable.
  • Ability to draft clear, concise written materials for diverse audiences including government officials, scientists, and the general public.
  • Prior professional work experience is not required for entry into the UN Internship Programme.
