Programme Officer- Weaving Peace at Interpeace – Interpeace Kenya Job Details

About the Role

Interpeace is an independent international peacebuilding organisation founded in 1994 by the United Nations to develop evidence-based approaches to conflict resolution and peace-building across fragile regions. This full-time position in Nairobi offers the opportunity to coordinate a significant cross-border peacebuilding initiative in the Horn of Africa, managing day-to-day programme delivery across multiple countries and partner organisations.

The Programme Officer- Weaving Peace at Interpeace will join the Programmes Unit and report to the Country Representative. You will serve as a critical operational link between Interpeace country teams, implementing partners, and the organisation’s monitoring and finance functions. This role suits candidates with programme management experience in the NGO sector who can manage complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives while maintaining strict donor compliance and conflict-sensitive practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the daily implementation of the Mandera Triangle cross-border programme across four outcomes and three implementing partners, ensuring activities are delivered on schedule, to quality standards, and in accordance with agreed work plans, budgets, donor requirements, and Interpeace’s conflict-sensitive methodology.
  • Monitor progress against quantified targets—including dialogues, forums, early warning systems, trainings, and resource-sharing agreements—and escalate delays, risks, and operational bottlenecks promptly to senior staff.
  • Develop, track, and support detailed costed work plans aligned to the results framework and budget, following up on agreed actions with partners and internal teams.
  • Serve as the primary operational contact for three implementing partner organisations (NEPCOH, YAPAD, and OSDA), facilitating work planning, capacity strengthening, and ensuring delivery aligns with formal agreements and responsibilities.
  • Compile high-quality monthly, biannual, and annual reports that synthesise narrative, analytical, and monitoring data to meet both donor and Interpeace standards; maintain disaggregated beneficiary databases by gender, age, and disability status.
  • Coordinate monitoring activities with technical support from the monitoring and evaluation team, including support to baseline and endline assessments, outcome harvesting, and framework reviews.
  • Review partner Cash Transfer Requests to verify alignment with work plans and budgets, support budget reconciliations and fund releases, and monitor compliance with donor requirements including procurement, visibility, and financial controls.
  • Apply do-no-harm and conflict-sensitivity principles throughout programming to ensure activities do not inadvertently worsen tensions; uphold safeguarding standards and promote gender participation targets in line with UNSCR 1325 commitments.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BSc) or higher qualification (HND, MBA, MSc, or MA) in project management, international development, peace and conflict studies, or a related field.
  • Minimum five years of professional experience in programme coordination, implementation, or management within NGO jobs in Kenya or similar development contexts.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex, multi-partner programmes with experience in cross-border or regional initiatives.
  • Strong financial management and donor compliance knowledge, including experience reviewing budgets, monitoring cash transfers, and ensuring adherence to funding requirements.
  • Proficiency in monitoring, evaluation, and learning methodologies; experience compiling narrative and analytical reports to donor and organisational standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to produce clear reports, briefs, and analytical documents.
  • Knowledge of conflict-sensitive programming, do-no-harm principles, and safeguarding practices in peacebuilding contexts.

What to Expect

  • You will work within a collaborative peacebuilding team that includes technical advisors, partners across Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia, and monitoring and finance specialists.
  • The role involves frequent coordination with government institutions, regional mechanisms (IGAD, NOREB), civil society forums, and cross-border coordination bodies; occasional travel to field sites may be required.
