About the Role
Presbyterian University of East Africa is seeking a Finance Officer to lead its financial operations and reporting functions. This is a full-time position based in Nairobi, reporting to the Vice Chancellor. The Finance Officer will play a central role in managing the university’s finances, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and providing strategic financial guidance to institutional leadership.
The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of financial planning, budgeting, accounting, and reporting while supervising the finance and accounting team. This role combines technical accounting expertise with strategic oversight, requiring both detailed knowledge of financial systems and the ability to advise senior management on resource allocation across the institution.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the university’s annual budget, monitor expenditure against projections, and adjust financial plans based on institutional priorities and cash flow requirements.
- Create and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls that safeguard assets and ensure efficient use of university resources across all departments.
- Prepare financial statements and annual reports in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and submit all statutory returns to relevant regulatory authorities.
- Coordinate with external and internal auditors, address audit findings, and maintain the integrity and accuracy of all financial records and disclosures.
- Monitor the university’s compliance with national legislation, tax obligations, and any applicable international regulatory requirements.
- Oversee daily finance department operations, establish revenue collection systems, track research grants, and manage institutional endowments and donations.
- Manage, mentor, and evaluate the performance of finance and accounting staff, identifying training needs and supporting professional development within the department.
- Generate monthly and quarterly management reports that provide actionable insights into financial performance and support decision-making by university executives.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Commerce, Economics, or a closely related discipline from a recognized university.
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business Management, Business Administration, or an equivalent business-related qualification from an accredited institution.
- Current CPA (K) qualification, ACCA finalist status, or equivalent professional accounting certification; membership in the relevant professional accounting body is required and must be in good standing.
- Minimum of five years’ post-qualification experience in finance, accounting, budgeting, auditing, or financial management, preferably gained in a university, public sector, or similar institutional setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of financial management regulations, accounting standards, internal control frameworks, and audit procedures.
- Proficiency with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and financial management software; familiarity with artificial intelligence tools and evidence of ongoing professional development is expected.
- Strong analytical and financial reporting capabilities, with proven ability to develop multi-year financial plans and interpret complex financial data for executive audiences.
