Scope of the Role

This presents an exciting opportunity for a young and dynamic professional who is eager to gain their first job experience in Climate Resilience. You will collaborate with a multinational team across the region, making it an excellent opportunity for growth. We are seeking a dedicated, independent, and highly motivated individual who is willing to learn and contribute creative ideas to help us achieve our Climate Resilience Management goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in mapping ongoing and previous projects in the region that have a climate component, and gather relevant information and data from various countries.
  • Support the preparation of climate capacity-building initiatives for country office staff by collecting pertinent research and data related to sectors impacted by climate change.
  • Conduct research to identify potential local climate and environmental partners in the region.
  • Aid in harmonizing and structuring the ongoing climate initiatives in different country offices.
  • Review national climate-related policies and frameworks, and conduct a mapping exercise to assess children’s participation in these efforts.
  • Assist in climate and environmental advocacy work for various country offices by creating capacity statements, social media posts, and factsheets.
  • Contribute to research and knowledge gathering/dissemination on various climate and environmental topics to support our ongoing climate initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Hold a university degree (minimum BSc) in climate change, geography, natural resource management, environmental science, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Possess an understanding of climate change projections, climate data interpretation for Eastern and Southern African countries, and awareness of climate change impacts and environmental issues across various sectors in this region.
  • Familiarity with nature-based solutions and locally-led adaptation principles, with experience in implementing adaptation and mitigation actions in developing country contexts, especially at the community level.
  • Strong experience and a keen interest in research, data analysis, and report writing on various climate and environmental topics in Eastern and Southern African countries.
  • Ability to work independently, proactively set priorities, create manageable plans, and consistently deliver high-quality results.
  • Skill in effectively interacting with multiple stakeholders (government, partners, NGOs, SCI staff) to successfully collect information and data.
  • Capability to think across different sectors and adopt a holistic perspective.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in social media to support advocacy efforts.
  • Preferably, proficiency in using remote sensing and GIS software.
  • Preferably, well-connected through involvement in a Youth Climate Network.
