Key Responsibilities

  • Receive bodies from wards, casualty departments, external facilities, police, and the public, ensuring respectful handling and strict adherence to standard mortuary protocols.
  • Confirm identity details through documentation and labeling systems; maintain traceability by updating mortuary registers for all receipts, movements, and releases.
  • Place bodies in cold storage according to standard operating procedures, ensuring correct positioning, labeling, and preservation measures are applied consistently.
  • Identify medico-legal cases and escalate appropriately; maintain controlled access and chain-of-custody documentation for all such cases.
  • Assist in post-mortem processes, including preparation of the post-mortem area, equipment readiness, safe body handling, and return of bodies to cold storage or authorized release.
  • Prepare bodies for viewing and release in line with hospital protocols and cultural sensitivity, including washing, dressing, shrouding, and basic presentation as per approved standards.
  • Release bodies only to authorized representatives after verifying identity, legal authorization, and documentation completeness; provide respectful guidance to families on mortuary timelines and procedures.
  • Maintain mortuary cleanliness through routine disinfection and decontamination; monitor cold-room temperatures, record findings, and escalate any deviations promptly.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE, safe handling of hazardous substances, and correct segregation and disposal of biohazard waste in line with hospital policy.
  • Manage mortuary consumables inventory, including mortuary sheets, disinfectants, PPE, and labeling materials; flag reorder needs and expiry dates.
  • Support accurate billing and charge capture to reduce revenue leakage; contribute to unit financial performance through cost control and resource optimization.
  • Attend departmental handovers, meetings, and training sessions; mentor new staff and students where assigned.
  • Comply with Avenue Healthcare governance policies, including fraud prevention and detection protocols; implement audit recommendations and report any irregularities.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma in Mortuary Science, Mortuary Management, or related qualification.
  • Valid Mortician license from the Kenya Health Professional Oversight Authority.
  • Minimum two years’ experience working in a hospital mortuary or funeral services environment.
  • Sound knowledge of biosafety protocols and specimen handling requirements.
  • Proficiency in maintaining detailed mortuary records, registers, and documentation systems.
