About the Role

AAR Hospital, a 140-bed Level 5 private referral facility in Kiambu, is recruiting for a Nurse Lead – Theatre & CSSD (Re-advertisement) position on a full-time basis. This senior nursing leadership role oversees operational coordination in the theatre and Central Sterile Services Department, ensuring surgical patients receive safe, timely, and effective care throughout their perioperative journey. You will report to senior nursing management and be responsible for the day-to-day clinical and administrative functions of a high-acuity surgical environment.

The Nurse Lead – Theatre & CSSD (Re-advertisement) at AAR Hospital requires a seasoned nurse capable of leading a multidisciplinary team, managing resources efficiently, and maintaining compliance with clinical policies and regulatory requirements that govern theatre operations in Kenya.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead nursing activities within the operating theatres, maintaining control over staff deployment, scheduling, and performance management in accordance with hospital disciplinary procedures.
  • Ensure all surgical patients are evaluated the day before their scheduled procedure, with findings documented and communicated across the multidisciplinary team to facilitate coordinated care.
  • Oversee daily compliance checks for crash carts, equipment calibration, sterilisation protocols, infection control measures, and hand hygiene standards across the theatre unit.
  • Manage theatre inventory, equipment maintenance coordination with biomedical engineering, supply ordering, and cost-effective utilisation of hospital resources to support both quality delivery and financial sustainability.
  • Investigate patient complaints and incident reports promptly according to hospital policy, documenting findings within the same shift and escalating as appropriate.
  • Mentor and supervise nursing staff and student nurses, modelling professional conduct, ensuring dignified patient care, and facilitating their involvement in treatment decisions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, record-keeping, and secure storage of all clinical information to support continuity of care, quality assurance, and legal compliance.
  • Implement infection control protocols to safeguard patients, staff, visitors, and relatives, while monitoring equipment for damage, wastage, or loss.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Higher National Diploma in Nursing or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, with substantial experience in theatre or perioperative care settings.
  • Valid professional nursing registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya and adherence to statutory nursing regulations.
  • Demonstrated competency in theatre equipment operation, sterilisation procedures, and perioperative clinical protocols.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to supervise staff, conduct performance reviews, and apply disciplinary procedures fairly and consistently.
  • Proficiency in clinical documentation, incident reporting, and audit participation to support continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Knowledge of infection control, patient safety principles, and the ability to interpret critical laboratory or procedural values and act promptly on abnormal findings.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities to coordinate effectively with medical staff, theatre teams, and other departments.
