About the Role

Kenya Medical Research – KEMRI is recruiting a Laboratory Analyst – Isiolo County to join its laboratory operations team in Isiolo. This is a full-time Government position within Kenya’s premier health research institution. The Laboratory Analyst will support disease surveillance and outbreak investigation activities, working across microbiology, ELISA, and molecular diagnostics platforms. This role combines specimen handling, data analysis, and research support in a field-based laboratory setting.

The Laboratory Analyst – Isiolo County at Kenya Medical Research – KEMRI reports to the Laboratory Director and operates as part of a multidisciplinary team. You will manage diagnostic procedures, maintain laboratory equipment, prepare manuscripts, and ensure compliance with quality assurance standards. This position requires hands-on technical work and responsibility for accurate record-keeping in a research environment that feeds into national disease surveillance systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute testing procedures for clinical specimens collected during disease outbreak investigations across Kenya and the East African region
  • Develop and implement diagnostic protocols for specialized laboratory studies as directed by the Laboratory Director
  • Contribute to microbiology, ELISA, and molecular testing workflows as an active team member
  • Perform initial statistical review of laboratory data and coordinate with epidemiologists and data specialists for further analysis
  • Prepare research manuscripts documenting laboratory findings and study outcomes as required
  • Receive study participants at the Eremet health center laboratory facility, obtain informed consent, and manage phlebotomy procedures
  • Collect nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs, accurately process samples, and maintain detailed documentation throughout all study procedures
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment, monitor supply levels, and place procurement orders
  • Complete quality assurance and quality control reviews on laboratory data, samples, and records
  • Maintain clean and organized laboratory work areas and assist with administrative laboratory functions

Requirements & Qualifications

  • BSc degree in Biological Sciences or equivalent qualification (mandatory)
  • Minimum one year of professional experience in a laboratory setting post-graduation (mandatory)
  • Demonstrated competency in microbiology and molecular biology techniques, including real-time RT-PCR methodology (mandatory)
  • Fluency in English, Turkana, and Swahili—both written and verbal communication required (mandatory)
  • Current registration and valid practicing license from the Kenya Medical Laboratory and Technicians Board (KMLLTB) (mandatory)
  • Valid certification in Good Clinical Practice and/or Human Subjects Protection (mandatory)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (mandatory)
  • Prior work experience in Isiolo County or the surrounding region (mandatory)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work collaboratively in team environments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities with strong interpersonal and organizational competencies
