About the Role
The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) is recruiting Field Service Workers -Pathology- CIMMYT at Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) to support wheat pathology research initiatives. This full-time position is based in Nairobi and involves hands-on laboratory, greenhouse, and field work. Key Responsibilities
- Prepare basic growth media and sterilise laboratory glassware and tools under supervision to ensure accurate experimental conditions
- Sterilise simple laboratory materials and maintain stem rust cultures and wheat plants in the greenhouse environment
- Collect, handle, and process infected plant samples according to established protocols and safety guidelines
- Support field activities including plot preparation, planting, weeding, and disease scoring under the direction of senior researchers
- Maintain trap nurseries throughout the growing season and assist in field sample collection and documentation
- Keep laboratory, greenhouse, and field areas clean and well-organised, and maintain accurate records of samples and greenhouse activities
- Monitor and update laboratory supplies inventory and assist in basic equipment cleaning and maintenance
- Report hazards, accidents, or damaged equipment immediately to supervisors and comply with all workplace safety procedures
Requirements & Qualifications
- KCSE (O-Level) certificate, or Certificate/Diploma in agriculture, laboratory work, greenhouse operations, or related field
- Minimum one year of experience in laboratory, greenhouse, farm, or agricultural research support activities
- Basic knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, cleanliness standards, and proper handling of research materials
- Experience working in a plant pathology or agricultural research setting
- Familiarity with basic laboratory equipment and standard procedures used in pathology work
- Knowledge of greenhouse operations, plant care, and basic plant disease concepts
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work safely with potentially infected plant materials
