About the Role
Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is recruiting a General Cashier for their Kenya property. This is a full-time position responsible for managing all cash, cheque, and credit card transactions across Front Office, Food & Beverage, and other hotel departments. The General Cashier serves as a financial custodian for the hotel, ensuring accurate daily reconciliation, secure cash handling, and compliance with banking and regulatory procedures.
The role reports to the Finance Manager and requires strong numerical accuracy, integrity under pressure, and knowledge of hospitality finance systems. Key Responsibilities
- Collect and verify all remittance envelopes from Front Office and Food & Beverage staff daily, working alongside an assigned witness to confirm cash, cheques, and credit card vouchers against computerized reports.
- Count, balance, and prepare bank deposits for all cash collections and cheques, ensuring deposits are made intact and match recorded totals.
- Compile and balance credit card sales vouchers by card company daily, verify them against system records, and prepare them for banking-in.
- Maintain daily and monthly transaction records by credit card company, and update foreign exchange rates in the property management system based on bank sources.
- Disburse approved petty cash requests and prepare disbursement summaries for review by the Cluster Director of Finance.
- Prepare and balance the General Cashier’s Daily Report, detailing all cash collections and payments for review by the Income Auditor and Finance Manager.
- Manage cash advances, ensuring they carry approval from both the General Manager and Director of Finance before processing.
- Assist in surprise cash counts, track bank drafts pending clearance, and coordinate with the Finance Manager on outstanding items.
- Train hotel staff on cash-handling procedures, including identification of forged notes and verification of cheques and credit cards.
- Coordinate with payroll and outsource vendors regarding tax withholdings, pension contributions, and statutory levies for timely processing.
- Verify hotel payroll for accuracy and timeliness, and maintain detailed staff records for local fund contribution calculations.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a closely related field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a cashier, preferably in a hotel or hospitality environment.
- Proficiency with computer systems, including POS software and financial management tools used in hospitality.
- Strong mathematical ability and accuracy when handling large cash amounts.
- Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail in financial reconciliation.
- Knowledge of financial regulations, cash-handling procedures, and banking protocols.
- Familiarity with foreign currency exchange processes and rates management.
- Fluent English communication, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and adapt to shift work including weekends and holidays.
