About the Role
Absa Bank Limited is recruiting a Universal/SME Banker for a full-time position in Kenya. The Universal/SME Banker will be responsible for managing portfolios across retail and business banking products while maintaining the high operational standards expected within the banking sector in Kenya.
The position is structured around three core pillars: business development and growth (60% of time), customer experience delivery (20%), and internal controls with risk management (10%), with the remainder focused on team development. Success in this role means understanding your customers’ financial needs deeply and matching them with appropriate banking solutions while ensuring every interaction reflects the bank’s commitment to service excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute business growth strategies for the branch by identifying opportunities to increase new business and wallet share from existing customers, working with a clear understanding of all retail and business banking products available.
- Manage your portfolio of customers in line with the bank’s risk appetite, conducting regular reviews and assessments to ensure quality and appropriate account classification.
- Collaborate across departments—including direct sales teams, asset finance, corporate investment banking, and bancassurance—to develop cross-selling opportunities and improve customer profiling.
- Conduct ongoing market intelligence to identify emerging markets, customer trends, new government directives, and regulatory changes that could affect branch strategy and product positioning.
- Develop and implement marketing approaches for new business acquisition and actively nurture existing client relationships to meet agreed sales targets.
- Monitor your performance against daily targets for both new and existing clients, creating action plans to address any shortfalls and ensuring quality account funding at customer onboarding.
- Respond promptly to customer issues and complaints, escalating where necessary to meet resolution timeframes and maintain branch Net Promoter Score (NPS) standards.
- Ensure all Absa policies, Know Your Customer (KYC), and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) processes are followed, with proper documentation in place and accurate customer information captured in the core banking system.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Business-related degree from a recognized institution.
- Proven track record of achieving sales targets in a banking or financial services environment, with demonstrated ability to deliver results consistently.
- Familiarity with banking products and services including checking accounts, savings accounts, loans, credit cards, and related financial solutions.
- High attention to detail and sense of urgency when handling customer matters and transaction processing.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and tight timelines while maintaining quality standards.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate well to staff at all levels and external customers.
- Flexibility and adaptability to meet the changing demands of a branch banking environment.
