Position Title: Young Statistician

Job Purpose:
As a Young Statistician, the selected candidate will work under the guidance of Supervisors and Mentors to develop their skills and perform assigned responsibilities effectively.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Enhance statistical programming skills, focusing on tools such as R and Python, to improve the production of statistical data.
  2. Assist in the development of statistical and machine learning models to support various statistical domains.
  3. Contribute to new approaches for deriving insights and managing real-time and open-source data, including social media, incident tracking databases, and geospatial data.
  4. Collaborate with stakeholders on projects aimed at developing applications for emerging areas in official statistics.
  5. Undertake any other duties as assigned.

Requirements for Appointment

  • Citizenship: Must be a Kenyan citizen.
  • Educational Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Geospatial/Geographic Information Systems, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in R or Python programming.
  • Specializations: Opportunities are available in four categories: Software Engineering, Data Science, Data Management, and Geospatial Technology.

Additional Qualifications (Added Advantage)

1. Software Engineering Category

  • Experience in Full Stack Development with a focus on web applications and web development.
  • Front-end development expertise in HTML, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
  • Familiarity with frameworks or libraries such as NextJS, D3JS, or ThreeJS.

2. Data Science Category

  • Proficiency in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.
  • Experience with data manipulation and analysis libraries like Pandas, NumPy, and Scikit-learn.
  • Proficiency in SQL for data querying and manipulation.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Matplotlib, Seaborn, or Plotly.

3. Data Management Category

  • Proficiency in data management practices.
  • Experience with at least two database systems, such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Familiarity with tools for database administration, ETL (Extract, Transform, Load), and data quality management.

4. Geospatial Technology Category

  • Knowledge of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing tools for location-based data generation.
  • Proficiency in QGIS software.
  • Experience in geospatial programming using Python.

Requirements for Successful Candidates

  • Registration with the Social Health Authority (SHA) for the program’s duration.
  • Registration with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).
  • A valid Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
  • Registration with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
