About the Role
Kwale County Government is recruiting a Pharmacist to join the Department of Health Services on a permanent and pensionable basis. This is a full-time position based in Kwale, on the south coast of Kenya. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring safe and effective pharmaceutical services across the county’s health facilities, working within the framework of Good Dispensing Practices and national pharmaceutical regulations.
The Pharmacist at Kwale County Government will be responsible for medicine management, patient safety, and clinical support across county health services. This role requires a registered professional with current practising credentials and at least one year of post-internship experience in pharmaceutical practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Review prescriptions for legal compliance, identify potential drug interactions, contraindications, and dosing errors before dispensing
- Prepare and dispense medicines in accordance with Good Dispensing Practices standards and provide counselling to patients on proper medication use
- Compound extemporaneous preparations as required by clinical staff and patients
- Participate in ward rounds with medical teams to provide pharmaceutical input and monitor patient medication outcomes
- Identify gaps in medicine stock and clinical challenges within pharmacy operations, and recommend improvements
- Maintain accurate daily activity logs documenting all pharmaceutical services and interventions undertaken
- Recommend Over the Counter (OTC) medicines to patients presenting with uncomplicated conditions and refer cases requiring clinical assessment to appropriate practitioners
- Record all pharmacy transactions in inventory management systems and maintain accurate registers for audit and accountability purposes
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor of Pharmacy degree (B Pharm) from an institution accredited by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya
- Successful completion of a one-year internship programme from a recognised pharmacy institution
- Current Registration Certificate issued by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board
- Valid Practising License from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (mandatory for appointment)
- Certificate in Computer Application Skills from a recognised training provider
- A minimum of one year of practical pharmaceutical experience post-internship
