Job Objective/Purpose

The aim of this role is to strictly adhere to Avenue Healthcare’s established policies, protocols, procedures, and standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a substitute for the Unit Manager when necessary.
  • Ensure the availability of proper equipment inventory on a daily basis and maintain their optimal working condition. Report any malfunctions to the Bio-Medical Technician/Unit Manager.
  • Ensure the financial viability of the unit by:
    • Providing quality patient care and fostering positive relationships with stakeholders.
    • Achieving financial objectives by managing costs within the budget and ensuring accurate and timely billing of drugs and services. Maintain an invoice rejection rate of < 3% through proper pre-authorizations and documentation.
  • Uphold Avenue’s corporate governance policies.
  • Prevent, detect, and report any instances of fraud or criminal activity.
  • Collaborate with the Nurse in charge to fully implement internal audit recommendations and achieve satisfactory ratings in subsequent audits.
  • Familiarize yourself with all systems, policies, and procedures outlined in the Hospital Manual, especially those related to medical service provision (e.g., admission and discharge procedures, nurses’ reports, emergency protocols, ward equipment, and supplies).
  • Record all sentinel incidents/events and report them within 24 hours using provided tools.
  • Ensure adherence to infection control standards as outlined in the hospital manual, following infection control bundles (SSI, VAP, CAUTI, and CLABSI) as applicable.
  • Compile daily government reports and submit them to the Unit Manager (e.g., leprosy, cholera, maternal deaths).
  • Supervise patient attendants according to their job description.
  • Actively participate in ward rounds and receive handover reports from outgoing shift nurses.
  • Securely handle and document patient valuables.
  • Thoroughly document patient notes, review cases, and consult fellow clinicians or consultants when necessary.
  • Ensure diagnostic requests (lab and radiology) include patient clinical information.
  • Prioritize patient safety following the 6 International Patient Safety Goals (IPSGs).
  • Provide patient and family education applicable to the patient’s medical condition.
  • Develop and implement a nursing care plan based on patient needs.
  • Maintain a well-stocked emergency trolley and ensure damaged equipment is promptly reported.
  • Update doctors/consultants on patient progress and critical values.
  • Perform invasive nursing procedures with aseptic technique.
  • Enter unit-specific data daily and promptly.
  • Ensure all relevant consultants have explained procedures and obtained consent.
  • Complete official checklists before patient procedures (theatre, radiology, renal).
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality as per policy.
  • Participate in emergency response.
  • Administer drugs following the 10 rights of drug administration.
  • Submit new drug orders to pharmacy promptly and administer STAT doses within 30 minutes.
  • Safeguard D.D.A. drugs and maintain the drug register according to unit requirements.
  • Refund all unused drugs immediately.
  • Ensure all verbal prescriptions are signed within 24 hours by the respective doctor.
  • Ensure treatment sheets include patient biodata and drug allergy information.
  • Adhere to Government and professional standards of patient care guided by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Prioritize client satisfaction through quality care, effective communication, timely feedback, and escalation of unresolved issues.
  • Fulfill any other duties assigned by your immediate supervisor in line with the job description.

Personal Specifications

  • Hold a BSc. in Nursing, Diploma, or Higher Diploma in Nursing.
  • Possess a minimum of 2 years of clinical practice experience.
  • Hold a valid Nursing Council License.
  • Updated BLS/ACLS/ATLS certificate.
  • Demonstrate organizational awareness and attention to detail.
