Melbourne Research Scholarships 2023 (Fully Funded)

Melbourne Research Scholarship (MRS) 2023-2024 is a fully funded scholarship for international students. Approximately 600 scholarships are available for Masters’s and doctoral research studies. This scholarship offers a living allowance of $32,400 per year, Full fee offset, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership, a Relocation grant, and many other benefits.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria:

Eligibility: To qualify for this scholarship opportunity, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Have applied for and fulfilled the entry requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, or already be enrolled in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne.

Selection Criteria: All domestic students who are offered admission to a Master’s by Research or doctoral degree (Ph.D.) at the University of Melbourne will automatically receive a Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset).

For Graduate Research Scholarships that provide a stipend in addition to the fee offset, both domestic and international students will be awarded based on academic merit. Eligible candidates will be assessed and ranked according to their academic achievements in their last completed degree and their research potential within their field of study. Additional factors, such as relevant professional experience, refereed publications, specialist medical qualifications, or original music compositions, may also be taken into consideration during the selection process.

Application Process:

  1. New students who have applied for a graduate research course by the application closing date will automatically be considered for the Graduate Research Scholarships. Within ten business days of submitting the course application, candidates will receive a notification that a scholarship application has been added to their record.
  2. Students who have accepted a graduate research course offer and deferred commencement to be reconsidered for a scholarship must submit an online application form by 31 October. A notification of the added scholarship application will be received within ten business days of submitting the online form.
  3. Currently enrolled students seeking a scholarship for the following year must also submit an online application form by 31 October. Within ten business days of submitting the online form, students will be notified of the added scholarship application.

Outcome Notification:

Domestic students will be offered the Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset) as part of their course offer. Offers for Graduate Research Scholarships that provide a stipend and fee offset will be made separately but typically around the same time as the course offers.

Variations of this award:

  1. Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS): This scholarship is available to high-achieving domestic and international students pursuing a Masters by Research or doctoral degree.
  2. Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships: Provided by the Australian Commonwealth Government, this scholarship is open to high-achieving domestic and international students undertaking a Masters by Research or Doctorate by Research degree. Refer to the University’s RTP Scholarship Policy for more details.

Benefits:

Stipend and Fee Offset Scholarships:

  • Full fee offset for up to two years for Masters by Research students or up to four years for doctoral students.
  • Living allowance of $34,400 per year pro rata (2023 full-time study rate) for up to two years for Masters by Research students or up to 3.5 years for doctoral students. The living allowance may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, maternity, and parenting leave.
  • Relocation grant of $2000 for students moving from States or Territories other than Victoria, or $3000 for students moving from outside Australia.
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students requiring a student visa to study in Australia.

Fee Offset Scholarships:

  • Full fee offset for up to two years for Masters by Research students or up to four years for doctoral students.
