General Nurse at Avenue Healthcare – Avenue Healthcare Kenya Job Details

Job Objective/Purpose

The main aim is to strictly adhere to Avenue Healthcare’s established policies, protocols, procedures, and standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a substitute for the Unit Manager when necessary.
  • Ensure daily inventory checks of available equipment, confirming they are in optimal working condition. Report any malfunctions promptly to the Bio-Medical Technician/Unit Manager.
  • Demonstrate the financial viability of the unit by:
    • Providing high-quality patient care and fostering positive relationships with stakeholders.
    • Meeting financial objectives by managing costs within the budget and ensuring timely and accurate billing of drugs and services.
    • Maintaining an invoice rejection rate of less than 3% through proper pre-authorizations and documentation.
  • Adhere to Avenue’s corporate governance policies and be vigilant in preventing, detecting, and reporting any fraudulent or criminal activities.
  • Collaborate with the Nurse in charge to fully implement internal audit recommendations and achieve satisfactory ratings in subsequent audits.
  • Familiarize yourself with and comprehend all systems, policies, and procedures outlined in the Hospital Manual, particularly those related to the provision of medical services (e.g., admission and discharge procedures, nurses’ reports, ward equipment and supplies, emergency protocols, etc.).
  • Record all sentinel incidents/events and report them within 24 hours using the provided tools.
  • Maintain and enforce infection control standards as per the hospital manual and adhere to the infection control bundles (SSI, VAP, CAUTI, and CLABSI) where applicable.
  • Compile government reports on a daily basis (e.g., leprosy, cholera, maternal deaths) and submit them to the Unit Manager.
  • Supervise patient attendants according to their job description and actively participate in ward rounds, receiving handover reports from outgoing nurses.
  • Safeguard patient valuables and maintain proper documentation of patient notes, consulting with fellow clinicians and consultants when necessary.
  • Ensure that all diagnostic requests (lab and radiology) include the patient’s clinical information.
  • Prioritize patient safety in accordance with the 6 International Patient Safety Goals (IPSGs).
  • Provide patient and family education relevant to the patient’s medical condition and address patient concerns.
  • Create and follow a documented nursing care plan based on patient needs.
  • Organize the emergency trolley for easy use during resuscitation, ensuring well-stocked drugs and supplies, prompt removal of damaged equipment, and reporting of any issues.
  • Update doctors/consultants on patient progress and critical values as soon as they become available.
  • Perform all invasive nursing procedures using aseptic techniques.
  • Enter unit-specific data daily and promptly.
  • Ensure that relevant consultants have explained procedures and obtained consent from patients.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
  • Participate in emergency responses.
  • Adhere to the 10 rights of drug administration, including submitting all new drug orders to the pharmacy promptly and administering STAT doses within 30 minutes.
  • Safeguard Dangerous Drug Act (D.D.A.) drugs and maintain the drug register accurately for the unit.

Personal Specifications

  • Hold a BSc. in Nursing, Diploma, or Higher Diploma in Nursing.
  • Possess a minimum of 2 years of clinical practice experience.
  • Hold a valid Nursing Council License.
  • Maintain an updated BLS/ACLS/ATLS certificate.
  • Exhibit organizational awareness and attention to detail.
