Position Main Function

  • The University Counsellor will support students’ mental, emotional, and general well-being by providing personal counseling with the aim of supporting students and staff to manage stress, navigate challenges, and make informed decisions.

Key responsibilities

  • Planning, coordination, and implementation of counselling programs and initiatives for the university community.
  • Offering confidential, one-on-one counselling services to students and staff on personal, academic, and emotional concerns.
  • Conducting psychological assessments and providing appropriate referrals for specialized support when necessary.
  • Maintaining accurate, up-to-date, and confidential records of counselling sessions and client interactions.
  • Organizing and facilitating awareness campaigns and workshops on issues such as mental health, alcohol and drug abuse prevention, and stress management.
  • Preparation and timely submission of monthly reports detailing departmental activities and outcomes.
  • Developing and managing the office’s procurement plans in alignment with the department’s budget.
  • Identifying and counselling students facing challenges, ensuring timely interventions.
  • Active participation in departmental meetings and collaborative initiatives.
  • Contributing to the continuous orientation of new students, fostering early access to available support services.

Required

  • Must be a registered counsellor, meeting the educational and ethical standards set by the Counsellors and Psychologists Board.
  • A relevant degree from a recognized institution in counselling, psychology, or a related field.
  • Must fulfill any additional requirements as stipulated in the Counsellors and Psychologists Act (No. 14 of 2014).
  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience providing counselling services, preferably in a university or educational setting.
