About the Role
DanChurchAid (DCA) is recruiting a Community Liaison Assistant – Optimisation Agronomy to support smallholder farming households in Turkana. This is a full-time position based in the field, working directly with communities to implement improved agricultural techniques and monitor their uptake. The role sits within DanChurchAid’s livelihoods programming, where the organisation works to strengthen vulnerable populations through practical agricultural innovation and community-centred learning. The position is contract-based and runs for 4 months.
The Community Liaison Assistant – Optimisation Agronomy at DanChurchAid (DCA) bridges technical agronomy knowledge with on-the-ground community engagement. You will spend most of your time in villages facilitating adoption of water-efficient farming methods, improved crop spacing, vertical production systems, and soil management practices. This is fieldwork—expect to travel regularly, conduct household visits, and lead farmer learning sessions in an arid pastoral context.
Key Responsibilities
- Support households to adopt improved planting densities, crop combinations, and spacing models suited to their plots.
- Assist in the installation and demonstration of vertical trellising, perimeter cropping systems, and hanging or vertical production methods.
- Guide households in setting up water-saving technologies including mulching, clay pot irrigation, bottle drip systems, and basin furrows.
- Work with farmers to trial heat-tolerant and high-value crop varieties, particularly those suited for shade-net production.
- Conduct weekly field observations, collect data on productivity and water use, and document results using digital tools or paper forms.
- Monitor adoption rates, identify barriers to uptake, and support demonstration plots and farmer field school sessions.
- Train women’s groups, youth collectives, and small producer groups on optimised agronomic practices, pest management, and soil preparation.
- Prepare progress updates, case studies, and action research summaries for internal reporting and donor documentation.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, agronomy, environmental science, natural resource management, or a closely related field.
- Basic understanding of horticulture, crop production, or smallholder farming systems.
- Ability to learn and apply new agricultural techniques quickly in field conditions.
- Experience with data collection tools (ODK, Kobo, Excel) is an advantage; not essential but valued.
- Prior work or volunteering in community agriculture, agribusiness, livelihoods projects, or humanitarian settings.
- Experience conducting surveys, monitoring activities, or practical fieldwork with farming communities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to engage respectfully with refugee and host community households.
- Organised, self-driven approach to fieldwork; capacity to manage tasks with minimal day-to-day supervision.
