Job Title

Research Assistant (Field Enumerator)

Job Purpose

Peace Winds Japan is seeking Research Assistants to support field-based data collection activities in Kakuma and Kalobeyei wards. The role involves collecting accurate qualitative and quantitative data to inform program learning, accountability, and improvement across key humanitarian sectors. The position works under the supervision of the MEAL Officer or M&E Lead and collaborates closely with project teams to ensure timely, reliable, and high-quality data using digital tools.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct household surveys, Key Informant Interviews, and Focus Group Discussions in assigned locations

  • Guide respondents through interview questions to ensure clarity and completeness of responses

  • Engage respectfully with refugees, host communities, and other vulnerable populations

  • Capture, organize, and transcribe qualitative field notes accurately

  • Collect data using approved digital data collection platforms

  • Support data quality checks, cleaning, and verification processes

  • Follow community entry protocols and uphold humanitarian principles and ethical standards

  • Support additional field tasks as required during emergency response activities

Job Requirements

  • Diploma or Certificate in Development Studies, Social Sciences, Community Development, Agriculture, Environmental Health, Monitoring and Evaluation, IT, or a related field

  • A Bachelor’s degree is an added advantage

  • Previous experience as a Research Assistant, Field Enumerator, or Data Collector is desirable

  • Proficiency in digital data collection tools such as Kobo Collect, ODK, SurveyCTO, or Comcare

  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Strong typing and data entry accuracy

  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of Swahili, Turkana, or refugee community languages such as Somali, Nuer, Dinka, or Arabic is an added advantage

  • Ability to understand and accurately administer research tools
