About Shamiri

1 in 4 young people struggle with depression or anxiety globally. Over half develop these conditions in adolescence, and 60% carry them into adulthood. Left untreated, mental health conditions damage health, livelihoods, and lives.

Yet 70% of young people globally and 90% in East Africa cannot access care. Traditional models cannot close this gap. They are expensive, specialist-dependent, and built on infrastructure that most of the world lacks.

Economic pressure, social media, and displacement are deepening the crisis, particularly across Africa. As the world’s youngest continent, Africa’s future depends on solving youth mental health at scale. Shamiri is building that solution; mental health systems that deliver effective care to every young person, at a fraction of the cost.

Since 2021, we have reached 210,000+ young people and trained and meaningfully employed 3,000+ providers. Young people who complete the Shamiri Program report meaningful improvements in wellbeing, academic performance, social relationships, and life prospects. Watch this TED talk for more information about our work.
