- As part of the Finance Department and in close coordination with the Programme Director, programme and finance staff, the Accountant will support practices to improve grants management and compliance across all programmes within the organization from inception to Grant Contract closure in accordance with Grant Agreements and other appropriate protocols. He/She will also help to strengthen the link between financial and programme management.
Key Responsibilities
Grants Management & Donor Compliance:
- Preparation of donor financial reports in line with donor policies and guidelines.
- Reviewing of grantee financial reports and working to resolve reporting gaps in coordination with Programme Officers.
- Facilitating capacity enhancement of grantee partners to improve their financial management systems and reporting mechanisms, through joint and one-on-one training.
- Supporting monitoring of grantee activities.
- Supporting in the facilitation of project audits.
- Review and tracking of grantee balances and ensure proper close out procedures.
Financial Management
- Review of payment requests in line with organisational manuals, policies, and donor guidelines.
- Supporting in budget proposal development processes.
- Payroll processing and payroll journals posting.
- Filing of statutory returns and processing the payments.
- Ledger reconciliation for listed accounts.
- Tracking staff advances and ensuring the same is liquidated on time as per the Travel Policy.
- Ensure timesheets for payroll charge are timely provided by staff as per donor guidelines.
- Provide support in the preparation for internal and external audits.
- Support on invoicing, receipting, and collecting accounts receivable.
- Keeping a check on the company’s finances based on financial status, monitoring the cash flows.
Risk Management
- Support the organisation in the implementation and tracking of its risk management framework.
- Supporting departmental heads in the review of their departmental risks and following up on relevant mitigation measures.
- Obtain and collate feedback from donors and programmes on grants management and compliance issues with a view to improving grant management by identifying challenges, risks and lessons learnt.
- Attend the Audit and Risk Committee meetings and make relevant presentations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce or any related field.
- CPA Finalist.
- 5 years’ experience in a similar role.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and some basic Kiswahili.
- Knowledge of Computer accounting packages and Microsoft Office 365 with strong Excel skills.
- Knowledge of using Microsoft Dynamics Navision.
- Knowledge of community development issues would be an added advantage.
- Ability to work under pressure and independently.
